Benten Mountain

最終更新日:2020年12月15日

Benten Mountain

Benten Mountain is considered Japan’s shortest natural mountain with a height of 6.1m and diameter of about 50-60 meters. The mountain can be found within the paddy fields located along Prefectural Road 210, which was part of the former Tosa Kaido trade route. Sakura (cherry blossoms), Japanese wax tree, camellia, and other flowers can be found growing on the mountain’s rocky surface, and the Itsukushima Shrine, built to enshrine Benzaiten (Ichikisimahime-no-Mikoto), can be found at Benten’s mountain peak.

Local NPOs and other organizations play central roles in maintaining the mountain area and holding many events at the mountain. The 6.1m tall Benten Mountain officially opens for climbing on June 1st every year and a “First Climb of the New Year” event is also held here. In addition to these climbing-based events, cherry blossom festivals and wedding ceremonies are also held at the summit of the mountain.

Every year, over 10,000 people enjoy scaling Japan’s shortest mountain, and if you complete the climb, you can receive an official Proof of Scaling certificate (for a fee) at the summit of the mountain.

Address:

8-1 Benzaiten, Katanokami-cho, Tokushima City

Parking lot:
